The Viper's ten-cylinder engine configuration was chosen for a specific reason. But the target was 400 horsepower with minimal forced induction — and in the late 1980s, that meant displacement. Adding two more cylinders to the proven LA-series V8 architecture gave the engineers the displacement they needed while keeping the engine naturally aspirated, reliable, and immediately responsive to throttle input.
