The 1968 Shelby GT500KR — King of the Road — earned its bold name through the 428 Cobra Jet engine that produced a conservatively rated 335 horsepower. In reality, the Cobra Jet made significantly more power than Ford officially advertised, a common practice designed to keep insurance premiums manageable for buyers. The KR featured a modified intake manifold, larger exhaust headers, and a recalibrated carburetor that gave it a noticeable performance advantage over the standard GT500. It was the last Shelby Mustang to carry a truly unique powertrain before the relationship between Shelby American and Ford began to wind down.
