The Shelby Cobra 289 was the car that started the legend. Carroll Shelby imported the lightweight AC Ace chassis from England and fitted it with a Ford 289 cubic-inch HiPo V8 producing 271 horsepower. The resulting combination weighed just over 2,000 pounds and could accelerate, brake, and corner with a ferocity that embarrassed established European sports cars costing twice as much.
