The Shelby Daytona Coupe was the car that won the 1965 FIA World Sportscar Championship for Shelby American — making it the only American constructor ever to win the title. Designed by Peter Brock, the coupe body was created to solve the Cobra roadster's aerodynamic limitations at high-speed European circuits. The enclosed body reduced drag dramatically, raising the top speed from 151 miles per hour in the open Cobra to 196 miles per hour in the Daytona. Only six coupes were built, and each one competed extensively before being retired. Today, an original Daytona Coupe is valued at over twenty million dollars, placing it among the most expensive American cars in existence.
