The Lancia Delta S4 was the Group B rally monster that competed in the most extreme era of World Rally Championship history, featuring a mid-mounted 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that used both a supercharger and a turbocharger in series — the supercharger providing immediate low-rpm response while the turbocharger delivered massive top-end power. In competition trim, the Delta S4 produced over 500 horsepower from its tiny engine — an extraordinary specific output that demonstrated the extreme potential of forced induction technology. The Group B era was ultimately banned after the 1986 season due to safety concerns, and the S4 remains one of the most fearsome and powerful rally cars ever built.
