The Lotus Elite Type 14 — produced from 1957 to 1963 — was the world's first production car with a fibreglass monocoque body, an innovation that allowed Colin Chapman to create a car that was extraordinarily light, aerodynamically efficient, and stunningly beautiful. The Elite weighed just 508 kilograms and was powered by a Coventry Climax 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine, yet its combination of feather weight and sophisticated aerodynamics allowed it to compete successfully against far more powerful machinery in international sports car racing. The Elite's flowing curves — designed by accountant and amateur stylist Peter Kirwan-Taylor — are considered among the most beautiful of any post-war sports car, and the car won its class at Le Mans six consecutive times from 1959 to 1964.
