The Lotus Esprit V8 — introduced in 1996 — represented the ultimate evolution of the Esprit line, featuring a Lotus-designed and Lotus-built 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produced 500 horsepower in its final GT specification — an extraordinary output for the era. The V8 engine was developed entirely in-house at Hethel by a team led by engineer Tony Rudd, and it was the first production V8 engine designed and manufactured by Lotus. The Esprit V8's combination of dramatic Peter Stevens-designed body, potent twin-turbo V8, and the legendary Lotus chassis created a supercar that could embarrass far more expensive Ferraris and Porsches on back roads.
