Mazda's journey to master the Wankel rotary engine began in 1961 when a delegation of engineers travelled to Germany to license the technology from NSU, and continued through years of intensive development during which Mazda's engineering team — led by the legendary Kenichi Yamamoto — solved the critical apex seal wear problem that had defeated every other manufacturer who attempted to commercialise the rotary. The apex seal solution involved developing a carbon composite material and precise manufacturing tolerances that allowed the sealing elements at the tips of the triangular rotor to maintain a reliable gas seal against the epitrochoidal housing over hundreds of thousands of kilometres. This engineering breakthrough transformed the rotary from a fascinating but impractical concept into a reliable production engine that Mazda manufactured in millions of units. These 3D domed wheel center cap emblems carry that engineering breakthrough heritage. Each emblem features the Mazda badge reproduced on premium automotive vinyl at high resolution with fade-resistant solvent inks. A thick dome of UV-stabilized polyurethane resin covers the print, forming a crystal-clear, scratch-resistant, waterproof surface. The adhesive is an industrial acrylic film.
