The Mazda RX-8 Type S — the sportier variant of the final rotary production car — featured a higher-output version of the Renesis engine producing 232 horsepower with a screaming 9,000 rpm redline, a six-speed manual transmission with shorter ratios, stiffer suspension with Bilstein dampers, larger front brake rotors, and an aggressive body kit with a rear spoiler. The Type S represented the most focused and engaging version of the RX-8, providing the closest experience to a pure sports car within the four-door freestyle body configuration. The 9,000 rpm redline of the Type S engine was among the highest of any naturally aspirated production car and provided a driving experience unlike anything available from piston-engine competitors.
