The Mazda 787B is the only Japanese car ever to win the Le Mans 24 Hours — one of the most prestigious and gruelling motorsport events in the world — taking victory in 1991 with a quad-rotor R26B Wankel engine that produced 700 horsepower while screaming at frequencies that spectators described as otherworldly. The 787B's Le Mans victory was the culmination of over a decade of Mazda rotary endurance racing at the Circuit de la Sarthe, with earlier entries gradually improving until the iconic number 55 car driven by Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot finally conquered the legendary circuit.
