The first-generation Mazda RX-7 — known as the SA22C in Japan and the FB in North America, produced from 1978 to 1985 — was the car that proved a rotary-powered sports car could be commercially successful, selling over 470,000 units worldwide and establishing Mazda as a serious competitor in the affordable sports car segment dominated by the Datsun 280ZX and Porsche 924. The SA/FB featured the compact 12A twin-rotor engine producing 100 to 135 horsepower depending on specification and market, mounted behind the front axle in a front-midship position that created near-perfect weight distribution and a nimble, tossable handling character.
