The Jaguar D-Type is one of the most successful racing cars in the history of Le Mans, winning the 24 Hours three consecutive times from 1955 to 1957. Designed by aircraft engineer Malcolm Sayer — who applied aerospace aerodynamic principles to automotive design decades before wind tunnels became standard in the industry — the D-Type featured a monocoque center section constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy, a dry-sump 3.4-liter XK straight-six engine, and a distinctive dorsal fin behind the driver's headrest that stabilized the car at Le Mans' high-speed Mulsanne Straight. The D-Type's victories established Jaguar as a dominant force in international motorsport and created a racing heritage that continues to define the brand's identity.
