The Mazda MPV — Multi-Purpose Vehicle — was produced from 1988 to 2016 across three generations and served as the brand's family-focused people carrier in markets including Japan, North America, and Europe. The first-generation MPV was one of the earliest Japanese minivans to compete directly with American minivans like the Chrysler Voyager, and its combination of rear-wheel-drive architecture, optional four-wheel drive, and a surprisingly engaging driving character distinguished it from the utilitarian character of most competitors.
